Advertisement- Where did it come from?

In all honestly a very long way does seem to be the answer, but how far has it really come??

Advertising started a very long time ago when the Egyptians were the men of the world. The Egyptians are credited for many, many inventions and how they created the pyramids is still a great mystery. They had already previously started to use papyrus which was actually another Egyptian ivention,to record many things on like events and activities. The Egyptians then caught on to advertisement and started to use this papyrus to make sales messages and posters to go onto walls. Advertising then grew on from this and now (thanks to the Egyptians) we see it in its current form.

Commercial messages and political campaign messages were found within the ruins of Pompeii and advertising used often in both Ancient Greece and Rome. The middle ages also used advertising but because many of the people couldn’t read they invented the image form of advertising so people would know which shop was which. It was also around this time that Town Criers were used to advertise many things such as fruit and vegetables.

Leap forward many years and you get to the stage in which door to door salesmen started doing the rounds and then came the invention of the radio in which companies were able to do short advertisements on between music and talk. The next revolution in advertising was of course the television, which in turn heralded the Advertising agency which began to appear.

If you look ahead once more you can start to see the shocking way advertising has grown, it has now gone into almost every sector from public transport to schools. We have also seen a range of different formats, from direct mail to twist stands so things are really starting to come along.

What is the future of advertising? It seems that with every new invention, advertising is not far behind, sneaking its way into everything and everyone.
